Clinical Specialty
Dr. Bederman is a Fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon specializing in complex deformity reconstruction and degenerative disorders. He is the Director of Orthopaedic Inpatient Care at UC Irvine Medical Center.

Clinical Interests
Dr. Bederman helps patients return to productive and fulfilling lives by treating their spinal deformities brought on by developmental and degenerative causes and those following traumatic, post-surgical, and cancer-related conditions. He specializes in adult and pediatric complex spinal reconstruction and minimally invasive cervical, thoracic, and lumbar techniques.

Our multidisciplinary team emphasizes non-surgical care and is committed to treating the whole patient and their family, not just your condition. As the only university-based medical center in Orange County, our program brings together specialists in neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, neurology, physiatry, anesthesiology, pain medicine, physical medicine and other specialties to design the most effective treatment for each patient.

The UCI Spine Center provides care for Orange County and the surrounding communities including Irvine, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Nigel, Garden Grove, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Westminster, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Anaheim, Brea, Mission Viejo, Temecula, Fallbrook, Hemet, Los Angeles, and Riverside. Patients from outside these communities are welcome at the UCI Spine Center as well.

Research Interests
Dr. Bederman has extensive research training in biostatistics, epidemiology and health services research. His research has focused on how patient and physician attitudes towards spinal surgery have influenced the use of surgery across geographic regions. He continues to look at the impact of other factors of health care delivery on the availability of surgical resources.

Dr. Bederman has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Additionally, he has presented his research findings to national and international audiences and received several awards. He is a journal reviewer for numerous medical journals and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association.

Background
Dr. Bederman graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Western Ontario and a Master’s degree in Biostatistics from the University of Toronto. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto where he also completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in Orthopaedic Surgery and subsequently went on to become an AO Spinal Fellow at the prestigious Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia.

After completing his fellowship, he was awarded the Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) during which he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in health services research and clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Bederman then returned for his clinical fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of California at San Francisco specializing in deformity reconstruction, complex cervical, and minimally invasive spinal surgery. Prior to joining UCI, Dr. Bederman was Chief of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
